Understanding the Caregiver’s Journey

Dementia is not merely a statistic; it represents one of the most urgent health challenges facing Canada today.

  •  Every day, 350 new families begin caring for a loved one with dementia.

  • By 2030, nearly 1 million Canadians are expected to be living with dementia.

  •  The impact of dementia affects not only those diagnosed but also the health and
    well-being of their caregivers.

  • Family and friends contribute 580 million hours of dementia care each year.

  • This caregiving effort is equivalent to the work done by approximately 290,000 full-time employees.

  • Caregivers provide crucial care, safety, and emotional support, often at a significant personal cost.

If you have ever felt overwhelmed, uncertain, or anxious about how to provide the best care, know that you are not alone. Thousands of caregivers share these same challenges daily—questioning their adequacy, grappling with guilt, and fearing burnout.

At SKC, we offer more than just training; we provide a supportive partner that understands your journey. We empower you with the knowledge and resources to connect, adapt, and thrive in your caregiving role, making a meaningful difference in both your life and the lives of those you care for.

As a certified Positive Approach to Care® (PAC™) Dementia Care Trainer and educator (GPA®-certified too), I have the privilege of working with healthcare professionals, home care teams, and family care partners. My workshops aren’t lectures — they’re interactive, dynamic, hands-on sessions designed to provide you with invaluable tools, practical skills, and the confidence to navigate each stage of dementia with compassion and clarity.

In our time together, you will gain insights:

  • The complexities of dementia and brain change — what’s happening, and how it affects day-to-day life, enhancing your understanding and empathy.

  • Normal vs. not-normal aging — learning to distinguish between typical aging signs and indications that may require attention if it's something more (medications; sleep issues, etc.)

  • The GEMS® states of Dementia — shifting your perspective to see what the person living with dementia is dealing with and acknowledging their evolving capabilities and unique strengths.

  • Practical PAC® skills and tips — equipping yourself with Positive Approach® communication strategies and the gentle Hand-under-Hand® technique to nurture connection and support.

  • Warning signs and early diagnosis — appreciating the critical importance of recognizing changes early, enabling timely interventions that help make a difference.

  • “Now what?” after diagnosis — receiving guidance on navigating Power of Attorney, financial planning, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders, home care services, elder care, retirement living, memory care, and long-term care options, as well as community supports and resources.

  • Supporting the care partner — caring for your overall well-being and prioritizing your brain health, which focuses on the 14 modifiable risk factors (Lancet Commission).

Every workshop is customized — whether you’re a family member seeking to feel less overwhelmed or a healthcare professional looking to deepen your expertise. My mission is simple yet powerful: to empower you with the knowledge and support needed to feel prepared, connected, and confident as you navigate this journey.
