Compassionate Dementia
Care Training and Education
There is no manual and you’re not alone
I’ve Been Where You Are
Caring for someone living with dementia can feel overwhelming. As you observe changes in their behaviours, abilities, memory, and language, the person you once knew may seem different now. That’s brain change! Careknowhow provides compassionate guidance and effective strategies to help you care for your person, while preserving their dignity and enhancing their quality of life.
Through Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care® (PAC®), Sarah provides guidance that empowers families and professionals to care with confidence, compassion, and respect. Together we can make a positive difference!
Understanding the Caregiver’s Journey
Dementia is not just a statistic — it’s one of the fastest-growing health concerns in Canada. Every day, 350 new families begin the unique and often challenging journey of dementia care, with projections suggesting that nearly 1 million Canadians will be living with dementia by 2030. The impact of dementia reaches far beyond those diagnosed; it profoundly affects care partners’ health and well-being.
The heaviest burden of this disease falls on caregivers. Family and friends already contribute over 580 million hours of support annually — equivalent to 290,000 full-time workers. This invisible yet vital workforce provides essential care, safety, and support to their person; however, it comes at a high personal cost.
If you’ve ever felt exhausted, confused, or unsure of how best to help, you are not alone. Thousands of caregivers share the same struggles every day — wondering if they’re doing enough, feeling guilty, or fearing burnout.
At Careknowhow, we offer more than training. We offer understanding, encouragement, and a partner to walk beside you as you learn how to connect, adapt, and thrive in your caregiving role.
Meet Sarah, Your Trusted Guide for Dementia Care
Sarah’s journey as a caregiver started in 2013, supporting her parents through serious illnesses and dementia. She knows firsthand the stress, uncertainty, and emotional toll that caregiving brings — and the difference it makes when you have effective tools and support. Knowledge is power!
Today, she combines her lived experience with professional expertise as a Certified Positive Approach to Care (PAC) Dementia Trainer, GPA Certified Educator, and Certified Program Director for Dementia Care.
Through customized workshops, one-on-one coaching, and professional training, Sarah equips both families and health care teams with practical skills to:
Recognize and respond to dementia-related changes with confidence.
Communicate more effectively using PAC® and Hand-under-Hand® techniques.
Navigate care decisions — from diagnosis and legal planning to long-term care options.
Protect caregiver well-being through brain health and self-care strategies.
Her mission is simple: to make caregiving less overwhelming, more empowering, and always rooted in compassion and dignity.
Why Families and Professionals Trust Care Know How
As a certified Positive Approach to Care® (PAC™) Dementia Care Trainer and educator (GPA®-certified too), I have the privilege of working with healthcare professionals, home care teams, and family care partners. My workshops aren’t lectures — they’re interactive, dynamic, hands-on sessions designed to provide you with invaluable tools, practical skills, and the confidence to navigate each stage of dementia with compassion and clarity.
In our time together, you will gain insights:
The complexities of dementia and brain change — what’s happening, and how it affects day-to-day life, enhancing your understanding and empathy.
Normal vs. not-normal aging — learning to distinguish between typical aging signs and indications that may require attention if it's something more (medications; sleep issues, etc.)
The GEMS® states of Dementia — shifting your perspective to see what the person living with dementia is dealing with and acknowledging their evolving capabilities and unique strengths.
Practical PAC® skills and tips — equipping yourself with Positive Approach® communication strategies and the gentle Hand-under-Hand® technique to nurture connection and support.
Warning signs and early diagnosis — appreciating the critical importance of recognizing changes early, enabling timely interventions that help make a difference.
“Now what?” after diagnosis — receiving guidance on navigating Power of Attorney, financial planning, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders, home care services, elder care, retirement living, memory care, and long-term care options, as well as community supports and resources.
Supporting the care partner — caring for your overall well-being and prioritizing your brain health, which focuses on the 14 modifiable risk factors (Lancet Commission).
Every workshop is customized — whether you’re a family member seeking to feel less overwhelmed or a healthcare professional looking to deepen your expertise. My mission is simple yet powerful: to empower you with the knowledge and support needed to feel prepared, connected, and confident as you navigate this journey.
“Dementia doesn’t rob someone of their dignity; it’s our reaction to them that does!”
